The Antidote For The Maze In
Longwood Medical Area
Longwood Medical Area (LMA) in Boston is home for some of the most rewarding research centers and medical facilities in the nation. It serves as the main campus for the Harvard affiliated hospitals and thus naturally attracts students, researchers, medical professionals, and patients from all over the world. Despite this lucrative ability to attract people, it repels them at the same time for such a simple reason: an inability to provide an environmentally sustainable for both living and working. At the time of its initial development, the hospital buildings were clearly recognizable. Their typologies reflected contemporary medical advances tested on different continents. However, advances in research and technology required more mechanical systems and infiltrated the natural representation of the hospitals. As a result, LMA became a maze. This thesis specifically tackles the urban issues of the area by introducing floating housing towers to serve as a main living system for healthcare professionals on site. It also negates the positively overflowing medical buildings by inserting decisively distinct residential buildings to act as landmarks. In addition to this, the intervention focuses on amplifying green spaces for the public and highlighting the institution’s identity.
